Serama Hens
The Malaysian Serama bantam is the world’s smallest chicken breed, with adults weighing less than 500g and standing 15-25 centimeter tall. This unique breed, believed to have origins dating back to the 1600s, was refined in the 1970s. Serama bantams are categorised by weight, with the smallest, around 350g, being the most sought after. They have an upright posture, small comb, and a distinctive appearance, with a high breast and tail held at 90°.
These bantams make excellent house pets, popular in the UK for their friendly and confident nature. Their crow is quieter than larger breeds, making them suitable for indoor living, but it’s best to avoid keeping multiple cockerels together to prevent conflicts. Breeding Serama bantams can be challenging due to the presence of the Japanese Bantam “lethal gene,” resulting in some hatching failures or chick mortality. They have a shorter incubation period of 19-20 days, and their chicks come in various colours and sizes. These bantams mature at 16-18 weeks, lay eggs year-round, and continuously moult. They hail from tropical regions and may require protection from extreme cold. Additionally, they prefer layers mash over pellets, and their eggs vary in colour from pure white to dark brown, with five Serama eggs equaling one large graded egg.
