Ensuring Your Hens’ Happiness

Happiness in hens mirrors our own—simple things matter!

Their joy hinges on three main elements: feathered companions, a diverse, wholesome diet, and space for natural behaviour. Responsible pet ownership means embracing the ‘five freedoms of animals’ for their contentment.

Freedom from Hunger or Thirst

Basic care includes dry layers pellets, mixed hen grit, and fresh water. Elevate it with:

  • Hanging leafy greens and herbs.
  • Offering ground-level fresh fruit.
  • Providing treats like seeds, dried fruits, and nuts in a feeder.

Freedom from Discomfort

Essential care offers 1 sq ft of draft-free indoor space with 6-8″ of perching area and 1 sq m of outdoor space. Enhance it with:

  • A spacious outdoor area for exercise and foraging.
  • Keeping outdoor spaces dry with pallets or wood chippings.
  • Warm, high-calorie meals in cold weather.
  • Rain shelters, temporary or permanent.
  • Regular foot and feather hygiene.
  • Shade for hot weather.

Freedom from Pain, Injury, or Disease

Basic care involves clean, predator-proof housing, gentle handling, and prompt treatment. Advanced care includes:

  • Vaccination or buying vaccinated hens.
  • Worming, ideally guided by a fecal egg count.
  • Providing a dry dust bath.
  • Avoiding the use of poisons near your birds.

Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour

Base care meets space requirements and provides company. Advanced care includes:

  • Room to run, jump, sunbathe, perch, and peck.
  • Private, dark egg-laying areas.
  • Straw for outdoor scratching.
  • Enrichments like bells, mirrors, or old CDs.
  • Letting them assist in your gardening.
  • A DIY chicken swing.

Freedom from Fear and Distress

Foundational care ensures secure housing and suitable outdoor times. Enhanced care offers:

  • Cuddles and gentle handling.
  • Multiple feeders and drinkers to avoid bullying.
  • Preventing children or pets from chasing or mishandling them.

Prioritise these needs for your hens’ well-being.
